Why heat the air outside?

Chances are many homeowners who have an older heating system do not realize they are warming the air outside. Most older heating systems are only about 60% efficient or less. That means 40% of the heat produced goes up the chimney. Basically, those heating units have to work longer in order to keep the home at the desired temperature.
With today's high efficiency furnaces rated at 92% AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency), you can save up to 32 cents on every dollar you are spending on your utility bill and quite possibly savings of $320 on an annual gas bill of $1000.

Digital programmable thermostats: Are they worth it?

A good digital programmable thermostat not only saves you money but offers you convenient features. For example, you can program it so that it maintains just the right temperature whenever you want it, even when nobody is home. You can set the program for either your heating or cooling unit to come on or shut down whenever you want it at whatever temperature you desire.
To conserve energy, you may want to program your thermostat so that it maintains a minimum temperature level while you are away or even in the middle of the night while asleep.

Energy Conservation Tips

  1. On forced warm air systems, clean furnace filters or replace disposable filters. A dirty filter can reduce airflow and cause your system to work harder than it has to.

  2. Keep your electric motor and fan bearings (or pump) lubricated for greater efficiency. Two drops of oil in the well each year should do it. Some new motors do not need lubricating (consult your owner's manual).

  3. If you have hot water heating, ensure that the radiators are filled to the proper level by bleeding air from each radiator.

  4. Make sure you have well fitting doors and windows. A good fit keeps cold air out and warm air in. Proper weather stripping and caulking will help.

  5. Proper attic insulation means lower fuel costs.

  6. Dampers in open fireplaces should be closed when the fireplace is not in use.

  7. Make sure your humidifier is working correctly. Proper humidification contributes to heating economy and family's comfort level.

  8. Have an annual tune up and cleaning done on your furnace or boiler by a qualified/certified gas technician.
